Panic Inc., the makers of many applications for the Mac like Transmit, Audion, Unison, Desktastic, CandyBar and Stattoo have recently added a new product to their already extensive line of applications called Coda.
This hot new Mac application, Coda comes equipped with all the tools necessary for complete web development and web design.
If you are familiar with DreamWeaver, perhaps you may understand the need for an easy to use, all in one application for web development and web design. Well, Coda offers all of that and then some for the Mac users who are interested in web development and web design.
Instead of having your editor open in one window, a shell for doing MySQL, a book open on your desk (or in another browser window), a file transfer client (like Transmit) a CSS editing program in another window and another browser or two opened for previews, Coda conveniently combines all these applications into one BIG web development environment to help eliminate all the cluster and work overload.
With a complete file browser, a full-featured text editor, a CSS editor, a terminal window, a preview based on Safari’s WebKit and reference materials for HTML, Javascript, CSS, and PHP, it is hard not to fall in love with Coda at first sight (but, keep in mind that once you dig in and begin to use it, you may find that it takes a little getting used to before a long term love can be established).
Perhaps one of the fanciest features of Coda, in my opinion, is their text editor. Panic did not want to introduce an unfamiliar editor with Coda so they licensed SubEthaEdit.
Steven Frank, co-founder of Panic Inc., explains that,
Obviously, text editing is the central part of web development, and there’s no surer way to start a holy war than to start comparing the pros and cons of different text editors. So, let’s not do that right now.
What we didn’t want to do was start from scratch with a whole new unfamiliar editor. I’ve personally always been a fan of SubEthaEdit, due to its lightweight, friendly UI, and killer collaboration feature.
So, we licensed it. Yep, Coda’s editor is, at heart, SubEthaEdit, and is completely compatible, down to its realtime network collaboration protocol. But we didn’t stop there. We added on a few additions of our own, including an enhanced autocompletion engine, auto bracket matching, code hinting, clips, on-the-fly HTML validation, an awesome new approach to find and replace, and much more.
All in all, Coda seems like a great piece of software that should make developing and designing a whole lot more organized and managed and, thus, easier and more efficient.
Panic has produced nothing but the best applications for the Mac thus far so I would expect nothing less from Coda.
If you do not have a Mac, obviously applications like DreamWeaver will still be sufficient for your web development and web design tasks until an application similar in caliber to Coda is released.
What are your thoughts on Coda? What should Panic change about Coda to make it better, easier to use and more efficient?
